Consultative Forum on 2012 Political Development

Dear Friends,

I trust you have had a relaxing and happy Christmas Holiday ! As the New Year is approaching, I wish to take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones good health and happiness in the New Year and the many more to come.

Political Reform is an important issue for Hong Kong. Last month, the government published the consultation paper “ 2012 Political Development Consultation” to solicit views of the public with regard to the election method for the election of the Chief Executive and the Legislative Council in 2012. The LegCo also had a debate about “Road Map for Universal Suffrage” on 2 Dec. Please follow this link. for my initial thinking on this issue and my floor speech. I understand that members of our profession care a lot about this issue and the views are very divergent.

To give you a better understanding of the contents of the Consultation Paper and the various viewpoints expressed, my LegCo Office will host a Consultative Forum in January 2010. We have invited representatives from the Government and different political parties/affiliations to share their views on this issue at the Forum. It is also an opportunity to express your opinions on this issue.

Details of the Forum are as follows. The Forum is now open for registration and no registration fee is required. I strongly encourage you to join the Forum to listen, and to let your voice be heard.

As promised during my election campaign in 2008, I will conduct an opinion survey on this issue among my constituents, and to cast my vote in accordance with the majority view. The present document published by the Government is just a consultation paper. After taking into consideration the views expressed during the consultation period, the Government will submit a detailed proposal to the Legislative Council for voting. I will conduct a full opinion survey when the detailed proposal is available.

May the joy, peace and love that Christmas brings be always with you and your loved ones ! Happy New Year !

Sincere regards,

Paul

P.S. The seminar is held for soliciting opinions of fellow members on the Political Reform issue.
